Woman want security and this is all about security on a most basic level.

Space Elevator as A Viable Logistical Supplier

To defend against space rocks we must first find them .
Then we must track them since they can interact with other objects as in a game of billiards with the results being an object that can strike the earth.
We must have the means to defend the earth, in place, before an impact hazard is identified.
We need to do this in a cost effective manner that leaves the earth able to financially survive.

There is a new technology research report that was funded by NASA. It would use a tethered platform attached at the equator and rotating with the earth. This is called a Space Elevator.

With the knowledge that we have gained in the last 25 years regarding cosmic impacts on earth. The message that all those meteorite craters on luna have been telling us. Now that we have decipered the language of impacts and have read the results. We should be sending a warning to all who can understand our message. BEWARE OF SPACE ROCKS!!! I would assume that trying to explain astrodarwinism in a warning message would be too hard to understand.

Now with all this chicken little," the sky is falling", what are we to do?

Mother Earth is located in a cosmic shooting gallery. Too many of the asteroids, comets and long-term comets have orbits that cross the orbit of our home planet. These are called Near Earth Objects or NEO's. Close asteroids are also known as Potential hazardous Asteroids or PHA's. Congress used the term large Earth-orbit crossing asteroids ECA's. The most Dangerous may be Earth-orbit Crossing Comets or ECC. The more we look for these objects the more we find.

Now, it is suggested that some of these objects, specifically long-term comets, have an albedo of .1%. This means that they can't be seen with optical instruments. They can be "seen" with infrared instruments. These Comets are found in the Oort belt located in the region beyond Pluto and out half way to the next solar system. There are an estimated 100,000,000,000 long-term comets and at least 1% are estimated to be potentially NEO. That is 1,000,000,000 comets.

Now I will go out on a limb and suggest that the reason that humans have never found intelligent exterrestial life. Civilization never gets a chance to survive long enough to keep ahead of the catastrophes that work to destroy it. This could be called celestial darwinism or astroevolution. I realize that my statement violates the ARGUMENT AD IGNORANTIUM (Argument From Ignorance). Where a statement must be true because it has not been shown to be false. Or, must be false because it has never been proved to be true. (Assuming false is the scientific principle.)


Isn't the issue of keeping mother earth safe for civilization, too important, despite the yearning that we not be the only civilization, to allow a wait and see logic?

Why is this Important?

In the early 1980's, Drs Louis and Walter Alverez postulated that the dinosaurs died out because of a meteroite strike from an exterrestrial blow. A creater was later discovered in the Yucatan penninsula at what is now called chicxulub. He found a rare chemical called iridium, which is associated with meteorites, in the geological strata known for the demise of the dinosaurs. This was found in locations throughout the world. Walter Alverez has yet to received the Noble prize for his work. Since that time over 150 meteorite strikes have been found on land and offshore.
It is postulated that an asteroid or comet over 1 kilometer would produce a worldwide cloud of dust known as an impact winter. This would destroy all crops for at least one season. If this strike was in the water, which makes up 2/3 of our earth, then there would be a major tsunami that would destroy the coastlines of the oceans' continents that surround the strike zone. A large exterresteral body could produce earthquakes and firestorms that would destroy civilization as we know it.

In 1994 Levy-Shoemaker 9, a long-term comet, crashed into Jupiter after being captured by that planet and breaking into 21 pieces. This motiovated Congress to task NASA with the job of finding and tracking all NEO Asteroids over 1 kilometer in size. NASA has tasked themselves to find 90% of these Asteroids by 2008.
